Play Therapy

Toys are children's words, and play is their language.

Garry Landreth, Founder of the Center for Play Therapy

WHY PLAY THERAPY?

Play therapy uses the natural language of children enable them to change the way they think about, feel toward, and resolve a myriad of challenges.

Studies have shown play therapy to be effective in addressing many behavioral health needs including:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

  • Oppositional defiant disorder

  • Anger management

  • Crisis and trauma

  • Grief and loss issues

  • Divorce and family dissolution

  • Academic and social developmental concerns

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM PLAY THERAPY?

Play therapy is particularly effective with children ages 3-12.

Play therapy can also be a useful supplement to talk therapy with youth and adults because it is able to engage the whole brain in the therapy process and facilitate deep and meaningful expression and exploration of emotional and mental health needs.

WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A PARENT/CAREGIVER?

Play therapy has been found to be most effective when a parent/caregiver is actively involved in the process. Depending on the specific needs of your child and family, your involvement could include collaborating with your child's therapist about their progress and behaviors outside of therapy or participating in play therapy sessions.
